Management Team
The OpenQ team has deep technical expertise in developing enterprise software and internet applications, industry experience selling to and serving top global regulated organizations, and prior business start-up experience at a venture capital firm and as founding executives at a successful software and services organization that grew to over $150 million in annual revenues.
Jim Zuffoletti, President

Mr. Zuffoletti has been a founder of start-up organizations as both an entrepreneur and an intrapreneur and has served life science companies for the past fifteen years. As President of OpenQ he has been a catalyst for determining the company’s strategic direction and for forging critical relationships with customers in the pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical device industry segments. He is also responsible for customer relationships and results. Prior to founding OpenQ, Inc., Mr. Zuffoletti was a founder of FreeMarkets, Inc., a pioneering e-business company. While at FreeMarkets, Jim served in a number of senior leadership capacities including sales leadership and general management. Before FreeMarkets, Mr. Zuffoletti started his career at GE in a variety of positions in finance and business development. Mr. Zuffoletti holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Amherst College and holds an MBA from the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration.
Otavio Freire, CTO

As the Chief Technology Officer at OpenQ, Mr. Freire is responsible for the creation of OpenQ's enterprise technology solutions, which enable customers in the global life sciences industries to significantly impact their sales, marketing and compliance efforts. Mr. Freire brings rich experience in internet applications, internet commerce and information technology serving the pharmaceutical, financial services and retail industries. His expertise spans software development, customer relationship management systems, content management technologies, and systems integration. Prior to co-founding OpenQ, Mr. Freire was the Director of Technology at a software company serving the pharmaceutical industry where he created innovative technology products that are currently live at eight of the ten largest global pharmaceutical companies, including Merck and GlaxoSmithKline. Mr. Freire's career has also spanned work at Oracle and InterWorld. Mr. Freire holds a Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering, a Masters of Science in Management Information Systems, and an MBA from the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration. He is fluent in Portuguese.
Jim Ting, Vice President of Engineering

Mr. Ting is responsible for the overall engineering, technology development and technical operations. Mr. Ting brings over to OpenQ over 18 years of experience in internet technology, enterprise level architecture and traditional IT services serving various industries. Prior to joining OpenQ, Mr. Ting has co-founded Zonebee, a software company focused on informal self-directed and social learning. Mr. Ting began his career with Accenture and has served in key executive and senior management positions at Interworld, HK Stock Exchanges, Smart System Technologies and Sterling Infosystems. Mr. Ting holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer and Systems Engineering from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Matt Prentis, Vice President of Product Management

Mr. Prentis is responsible for managing the design, development, and implementation of the combined OpenQ and Customer vision throughout the entire suite of OpenQ products and solutions. With over 15 years of experience in various product management and product development roles, Mr. Prentis brings a wealth of experience in delivering high quality products that focus upon optimal user experience. Prior to joining OpenQ, Mr. Prentis began his career with Accenture before becoming a co-founder of Circadium Technology. Following this, Mr. Prentis spent the remainder of his career within the healthcare and Enterprise Content Management (ECM) industries, working with organizations such as Cerner, Sourcecorp (managing product development), and finally Perceptive Software where he was responsible for a team of product managers specifically focused upon delivering SaaS and healthcare-based solutions for their customers. Mr. Prentis holds a Bachelors of Science in Architectural Engineering from the University of Kansas.
Peter Chang, Vice President of Professional Services

Mr. Chang is responsible for the satisfaction of our customers through successful implementations and effective technical support. Mr. Chang brings over 14 years of valuable experience from a variety of roles in business analysis, consultation, project management, and financial processing systems. After starting his career at Oracle, Mr. Chang was a consultant for Interworld and Q Strategies where he developed and managed e-commerce solutions, provided strategic IT implementations, and built relationships with existing clients to develop new business. His Project Management experience earned him roles to lead projects at Capital IQ and Sugar Foods Corporation where he implemented multi-million dollar enterprise software solutions and reduced millions in expenses through technology efficiencies. Mr. Chang joins OpenQ with an education from New York University’s prestigious Leonard N. Stern School of Business with a BS in Information Technology and an MBA.
Dr. R. Michael Broad, Data Services

Dr. Broad is responsible for expanding OpenQ's current growth by serving as the senior life sciences industry advisor, and by ensuring that OpenQ leads the industry in embedding subject matter expertise in its solutions for life sciences. Dr. Broad joins OpenQ with over 17 years of experience in biomedical research and bioscience commercialization. In addition, Dr. Broad is responsible for the development and operations of OpenQ’s Data Services group, which performs expert identification, profiling and analytics. He most recently served on the executive team of MolecularMD, a Portland, Oregon-based cancer diagnostics company that was co-founded by one of the world's foremost key opinion leaders (KOL) on targeted therapies for leukemia. In this position, Dr. Broad was instrumental in launching and marketing the company's first exclusive diagnostic tests. Dr. Broad graduated with a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada, and completed a research fellowship at the Karolinska Institute. He also holds an MBA from the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration.
Dave Mauro, Senior Vice President of Sales

Mr. Mauro is responsible for leading business growth as leader of OpenQ's global sales activities. Prior to joining OpenQ, he was Vice President of Sales at Cegedim Dendrite, where he led a team of Sales Executives responsible for driving new business development of CRM and Compliance solutions. Mr. Mauro brings to OpenQ 16 years of pharmaceutical sales, management and marketing experience and 7 years of providing Life Sciences companies with enterprise software and services to enhance sales force effectiveness and compliance. Mr. Mauro began his career with Sandoz Pharmaceuticals as a Sales Representative in New York City. He assumed a variety of sales positions of increasing responsibility, including Hospital Representative, District Sales Manager and Managed Care Account Manager. As National Sales Director for Innovex in the late 1990s, Mr. Mauro was responsible for building and managing over a dozen contract sales teams ranging in size from 5 to 500 Sales Representatives. Mr. Mauro has a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from the University of Delaware.

Joel Selzer

Mr. Selzer is recognized as a social technology thought leader, and he is a serial entrepreneur and innovator in the healthcare industry. He is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Ozmosis, Inc., which provides social business software and care collaboration solutions to hospital systems, heath care service organizations and life science firms. Prior to Ozmosis, Joel co-founded and led Medical Funding Services (MFS), a healthcare technology firm that took medical claims into the digital age.
He previously served as a manager and global subject matter expert in wireless technology and e-business at IBM Global Services and began his career at American Management Systems where he developed business intelligence and social network analysis systems for the U.S. Government. Joel received his MBA from the Darden School of Business and serves as a Founding Board Member of FounderCorps and Mentor to the Healthbox Accelerator.
Ozmosis, Inc. and DaVita, Inc., a leading provider of kidney care services, recently launched NephLink, a new online physician community for kidney care (powered by the OzmosisESP platform.) NephLink is a prime example of how Ozmosis is enabling a new model of collaborative care in the mobile and social age.
Dr. JannBalmer, RN PhD

Dr. Balmer was appointed as the first full-time Director for Continuing Medical Education of the University of Virginia School of Medicine in December 1990. In her role as Director for CME, the Office of Continuing Medical Education has demonstrated significant growth in meeting the educational needs of physicians and other healthcare professionals.
In addition, Dr, Balmer serves as the President of the Alliance for CME. She served as the editor for the Best Practices in CME Handbook distributed by the Alliance for CME for 7 years. She also serves as a speaker at the Annual Meeting of the Alliance for CME, the CME Industry Task Force Meeting, the CME Congress, and other selected organizations. In her role as Alliance President, Dr. Balmer serves on the Conjoint Committee, the Tri-Group and JCEHP Owners Group.
Ms. Balmer holds a BS in Nursing from the University of Pittsburgh, an MS in Child Health Nursing from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and a Ph.D. in higher education administration from the University of Pittsburgh.
Gabriel Lazarus

Mr. Lazarus is currently a Marketing Director at Medtronic, in the company's Latin America division, focusing on CardioVascular therapies. At Medtronic he has held a variety of postings, including successful stints in the company's European headquarters in Switzerland, a global marketing role, and a business development position. Mr. Lazarus brings a unique advisory perspective to OpenQ, having previously worked for Bloomberg News in Madrid, Spain as a journalist. He also worked as Lead Advance for Bill Bradley's Presidential Campaign and a bond researcher at JP Morgan in New York. Mr. Lazarus holds a BA in Political Science from Rutgers University and an MBA from the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration.
Dr. Merrell Magelli

Dr. Magelli resides in Omaha, Nebraska and is currently Executive Director, Medical Affairs, at Horizon Pharma. She has over 12 years of Pharmaceutical Industry Experience as a Medical Science Liaison, Team Leader, Medical Director, Senior Medical Director, and Drug Safety Officer. Prior to Industry Dr. Magelli was the Clinical Coordinator at Children's Hospital, Omaha, NE where she was in charge of the Investigational Drug Study Program, P&T Committee Co-Chair, IRB Officer, and Board Certified Pain Specialist. Dr. Magelli served as a faculty member at both Creighton University and Nebraska Medical Center for 15 years and was Preceptor of the Year in 1997.
Dr. Magelli has recently been recognized by the Kellogg School of Business for her excellence in Entrepreneurship for developing and starting a model for Veterinary Pharmacy in Veterinary Distributorships. She is also a Nationally Ranked Women's Trick Water Skier.
Dr. Michael Williams

Dr. Williams received his MD from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and a Master of Science in Microbiology from the Harvard School of Public Health. He completed his Medicine residency, Chief Residency, and Fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at the University of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville, where he joined the faculty in 1986. He currently serves as Chief of the Hematologic Malignancies Section in the UVA Cancer Center and the Hematology/Oncology Division.
Dr. Williams’ research interests are in the pathogenesis and immunotherapy of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and CLL, and in the clinical development of new therapeutic approaches for hematologic malignancies. He serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Lymphoma Research Foundation, Chaired the Executive Committee for the LRF Mantle Cell Lymphoma Consortium 2005-10, and is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the European Mantle Cell Lymphoma Network. Dr. Williams is Chair of the Hematology Subspecialty Board of the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is vice-chair of the Lymphoma Core Committee of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, and participates regularly in national and international programs devoted to education and research in lymphoma and hematologic malignancies.
Wendy L. Yarno

Wendy L. Yarno has over 26 years experience in the pharmaceutical industry with Johnson & Johnson and Merck & Co., Inc. She has held a number of executive positions in the marketing, sales, human resources, and policy areas. She most recently was the Chief Marketing Officer at Merck & Co., Inc. and retired from Merck in 2008.
She is currently on the Board of Directors of St. Jude Medical, a medical device company headquartered in Minneapolis, MN, and ADial Pharmaceuticals in Charlottesville, VA. Ms. Yarno is also on the Board of Advisors of HemoShear, LLC.,OpenQ, Inc., and the University of Virginia Patent Foundation, all located in Charlottesville, VA. Ms. Yarno has an MBA from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA and a B.S. in Marketing from Portland State University in Portland, OR.
